PERSPECTIVE: Dispelling some Myths about ITIL

Occasionally, I find people surprised of my interest in ITIL, knowing that the industry I work in is Internet.  With curiosity: “How do you apply ITIL on website and internet!” people ask. In other occasions I found people surprised that I am implementing this gradually without having this as part of a formal and official Implementation program!

That said, I believe there are a lot of myths around ITIL and  I find my self obliged to clarify the ambiguity.

  • ITIL is a governance framework,  and that’s why it is highly required and valid for industries where governance is usually considered an integral part.Completely wrong!. ITIL is a Service Management framework. ITIL is  a set of  good practices build upon the philosophy of thinking of all the effort and activities in the context of providing value to the end user in the form of service.   IT should be  aware that the end result is the value that is delivered and not a working set of IT components! . That said, ITIL can be applied to IT regardless of the industry.

Last week I have conducted a very interesting PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner training for the Signal Regiment of the Sultanate Army of Oman. It was a very unique experience. It was a real pleasure working with such competent and smart group of people from Oman.

At the end of the training I was honor with the regiment shield trophy.

I am really very thankful for the Sultanate Army of Oman/Signal Regiment for giving me this unique opportunity.

QUOTATION: Organization Structure

It is not a good idea to structure the whole organization according to processes. Processes are used to overcome the ‘silo effect’ of departments, not to create silos.

Last week I conducted ITIL V3 Foundation training for a group of six managers and engineers at Texum.

It was one of the best group I ever worked with. They were really very interested in acquiring new knowledge and practices. They have consistently challenged me with questions, that reflects great passion for knowledge, as well as, solid background and experience.

I am very comfortable that they will pass the foundation exam at easy and pursue the ITIL track up to the expert level. Continue Reading

Yesterday I have attended GJordan, my impressions were not really very good.

I found that presentations and discussions were really very shallow, and I did not really learned much about new technologies.

That does not definitely means that Google does not have great and exciting technologies and tools, but, I believe it was improper organization. Continue Reading

REVIEW: Inside Steve’s Brain

The book is supposed  to expose what’s going on inside Steve’s jobs brain and illustrate his thought process.

I honestly found the book interesting to read, yet with no real value.

Big part of the book is repeating over and over again how intensive the design process at apple is. At some stage I felt that the book is only about the design process of Apple new products. Continue Reading

In a region where  PMP certification is assumed all-what-you-need for project management, occasionally,  I have to answer the question “Why PRINCE2, you’re already a PMP?”.

PRINCE2 stands for PRojects In Controlled Environment.  PRINCE2 is a project management methodology, that is mainly concerned with establishing, maintaining and controlling the project environment. Continue Reading
